Heavy Metal Pollutants: Personal and Environmental Health What do cigarettes, old computers, TVs and cell phones, coal, and compact fluorescent light bulbs all have in common? The burning or inappropriate disposal of these items can all lead to the release of heavy metal pollutants into our environment. Dr. Peter Craig, a chemist from McDaniel College Westminster, has been studying ways to contain the environmental spread of heavy metals and treat the poisoning of contaminated people and animals. His research group of undergraduate students focuses on the synthesis of heavy metal chelating agents and assessment of the selectivity that these agents have for particular heavy metals. The talk will focus on the heavy metals Cadmium, Mercury, and Uranium, and describe the impact these metals have on people and the environment, as well as ways to mediate the toxicity this impact can cause.

McDaniel students The McDaniel Research Prize The final round of last semester' s McDaniel Research Prize included presentations about the benefits of social entrepreneurship to the developing world, the tragic life and death of Bulgarian playwright Georgi Markov, and the changes in the American electorate made visible by the 2008 presidential election. Who knows what we will see this semester? The last round of the McDaniel Research Prize will consist of the three finalists presenting talks based on their papers to an audience of jury members and the general public.
