Noted sociologist Bori Kriza, whose work touches upon the phenomenon of the rise of the far right in Hungary and the region, came to McDaniel College on October 27 to speak about her film Rocking the Nation. Professor Andrea Pető led McDaniel College students in a discussion with her concerning Hungarian far-right subculture as well as the current Hungarian political situation.
Bori Kriza with Professor Andrea Pető
Kriza answered questions concerning the access she had to film and interview the members of the far-right rock band Romantikus Erőszak ("Romantic Violence"), the social conditions that have contributed to the popularity of the band, and the place of the far right in the current complicated Hungarian political scene. She noted that the far right as an important political force will be here for some time: Jobbik, the far-right Hungarian political party won 15% of the vote in last summer' s European Parliamentary election. She noted as well that the best hope for Hungarian democracy and society is the continued creation of established civic institutions, something did not happen initially after the fall of Communism in 1989.
